: My wife has gotten to the point where she wants to get both of our cats declawed due to the damage they are causing. I am opposed to this. It wasn't until recently that I learned what all was involved in declawing a cat. What a horrible thing to do to any creature. So I am taking it upon myself to find alternatives to where and what they scratch. We have invested in a scratching post but it is useless. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions before my wife goes totally nuts!

: Email replies prefered. Thanks!

I have read that the main problem with scratching posts is that they are usually built to be aestetically (sp.?) pleasing to humans, while they should be appealing to the cats. It was suggested that the post be tall, untippable, and covered w/something rough like a BACKSIDE OUT carpet. Also, you might try scenting it with catnip.

I completely agree that declawing is cruel! Stand your ground.
