I'm fostering for a no-kill shelter that does not believe in declawing. I place my new charges in a room of their own for the first few days. In that room there is a cardboard scratch pad anchor to the floor with double sided tape and a 30" sisal/carpet post. All the fosters quickly use the cardboard pad and with a little encouragement with a favorite toy as enticement they use the scratching post. Even the 5 year old who probably never saw a scratching post before learned to use the appropiate surfaces. I also kept the nails trimmed. Sometimes I have a vet trim the first time and then just keep it up myself. No problems. No one has even been interested in using my furniture. It can be done and it's worth it.
